At that time, Wagga was the maintenance base for Regional Express Airlines (REX) as well as being home to the REX-owned Australian Airline Pilot Academy. RAAF Base Wagga, a ground training unit that included the RAAF School of Technical Training, also occupied part of the aerodrome. Wagga was served by scheduled services by REX (SAAB 340s) and Qantaslink (Dash 8s).
